The 95% Assignment
Around 2:01 AM EST, I received an e-mail from one of my instructors. It simply stated that the grades for the first assignment were posted and that my personal evaluation was attached.
I was nervous to open it. Literally sweating. Maybe it’s just because I was holding Dalton and trying to feed him and read at the same time, haha.
Anyway. I open up the attached document and what do I see? One point was taken off because I didn’t format my paper to Verdana, 9 point.
Are you serious? A 95% because of one silly mistake? I e-mailed him back. He was probably wondering why I was up so late or maybe wondering why I was questioning my 95% paper.
E-mail to Instructor:
Hi
You’re really going to take away one point because I forgot to format it to Verdana 9 point? :-/
I don’t want to sound like some crazy student obsessed with her grades, but I don’t let little things like this quit bothering me and then I get stressed out about it and do worse on future assignments. Basically, I’m a perfectionist. I thought we got extra points for turning it in early? Or is that just the Web Tech Program Orientation?
Is there any way I can get that point back so my grade won’t be a 95%?

Kerri deMendonca
Hell yeah I was going to try and get that point back! Like the e-mail says, I’m a perfectionist. I mean, to the point where I don’t trust anyone to do things correctly at home. I have to do it myself.
So he e-mailed me back telling me that there are bonus points on future assignments and tons of ways I can make over 100% in the class overall.
That’s nice. That’s wonderful, actually. But he’s not a perfectionist.
In a perfectionist’s eyeballs, no matter if we made 110% in the class overall, that 95% is still there and that is indeed not perfect.
Call me crazy. I don’t care. I just want 100% on that paper.
Stupid, Verdana! I knew you were trouble since the day I met you 10-years ago!

First Day of Classes!
Yesterday was the first day of the fall semester at my college. I decided last semester that it would be best if I took my classes online since I would have a preschooler, a newborn, and hopefully a full-time job.
Just to let everyone know… I’ve tried online classes 4-years ago and I get distracted way too easily by my website!
So I log into Blackboard, which is like a virtual campus or something, and what do I do? I go right to Twitter and totally waste 30 minutes on there!
After forcing myself to log back into Blackboard, I chose to review the Intro to Web Design course first. I started reading the syllabus and every other course document at 8:30am and finally finished at 1:00pm!
I mean, there was so much to read! During all that time, I did attempt to complete the first assignment, but his directions were very unclear. I thought I was the only student who thought this, but apparently a lot of other students did, too. We all got an e-mail this morning on how to submit the assignment. Now hopefully I can get that finished.
I ended up taking a mini-break after reviewing just that one class and started back up again with Web Technologies Program Orientation. I did not sign-up for that class at first, but the program head told me it was required if I wanted a degree. It’s supposed to “teach” me basic HTML and whatnot.
I totally laughed at the guy, but had him sign me up anyway.
So from about 1:30pm until 6:00pm, I was reviewing just THAT class. I thought, “Are you freaking kidding me? It’s going to take 5-hours or more just to get through one class?”
Well, I have two more classes to look over. I figured I’d get them done today and then create a schedule for myself so I’m not doing classwork all day long. I need to make time for my family, friends, job, and website. This schedule should help me out… I hope.

Fall 2010 College Schedule
I have been granted my financial aid for college this year, so I went ahead and registered for classes! I’m really excited for this semester to start, although, it’ll be tough to manage. So below is my schedule!
Beginning August 16th, 2010
- Introduction to Computers (CIS-110-451)
- Introduction to Business (BUS-110-450)
- Intro to Web Graphics (WEB-111-450)
Beginning October 18th, 2010
- Internet/Web Fundamentals (WEB-110-4502)
I’ve been creating and maintaining websites for 10-years now, so the computer and graphics classes will be a piece of cake. I’m not so sure about the business class though…

New Baby, College, Back to Work… Oh My!
As most of you don’t know, I am currently expecting a baby boy any day now. I already have a 3-year-old daughter, Lyra, and she’s a handful. I’m also on maternity leave from my job, Food Lion, and the next semester at the college begins on August 16th.
I am going to be overwhelmed for about half a year.
I expect it should be a little easy in the beginning because Lyra will be in preschool most of the day and since I’m used to being a mom, I’ll know how to multi-task with the new baby. I’m only taking three classes until October when I also go back to work. I think that my most overwhelming time will be October 3rd through December 18th because I’ll be doing everything during those months.
I’m just trying to get this all out so maybe I can breathe. Anyone have any tips on managing such a workload? Anyone else going through something similar to me?
Lord, I hope not!

Hey, I'm Kerri and I am the webmistress of this blog! I am a young mother of two children and one on the way! I'm working towards becoming a wedding and event planner in the near future, but I also build a lot of websites for no reason and I like to drink coffee. :)
